Commonplace Book, [ca. 1640-1675].

An English-French dictionary, prose passages, and verse, chiefly by Butler, with additional material compiled by his friend and patron William Longueville. The dictionary, with entries from A to Laurel, is an original compilation by Butler, written in his hand on 81 leaves of the volume. On the remaining leaves are 430 prose passages and some verse by Butler, copied by Longueville from Butler's original manuscripts. The originals had been jotted at random on loose sheets; Longueville copied them into this volume under a series of alphabetical headings. Since a number of the originals have been lost, this volume is the sole authority for about 180 passages. On the last leaf is an alphabetical index of topics. Longueville afterwards used this volume as his own commonplace book, copying material from other sources into blank spaces throughout the volume and on the endpapers and boards. His additions are chiefly from theological works or moral reflections from classical and modern authors.
